SPLAT FOODS CO. was founded in 1948 in Southern California by Frank Doyle, a short-order cook with a simple belief:
"GOOD FOOD DESERVES A LITTLE MESS."
From roadside diners and burger joints to late-night counters and long highway drives, our sauces have been there for the messy, the hungry, and the happy for over 70 years.

HISTORY
1948
THE BEGINNING
In 1948, diner cook Frank Doyle began mixing his own tomato sauce in the back of a small roadside kitchen in Southern California.
Known for making a glorious mess of every burger and basket of fries, Frank believed food was meant to be enjoyed, not admired.
His homemade sauce quickly became a favorite among truck drivers, families, and late-night regulars, inspiring the birth of SPLAT FOODS CO.
1957
THE BOTTLE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
In 1957, SPLAT introduced its signature no-drip squeeze bottle, making it easier for diners to serve more sauce with less mess.
The design quickly became a favorite in roadside diners across the West Coast and helped define the brand for decades to come.
1963
THE FACES OF SPLAT
Kids kept pointing at the chickens printed on SPLAT bottles and asking, “Who are those funny guys?”
At first, they were just simple drawings made for labels and diner signs. But as the questions kept coming, SPLAT decided to give them names, personalities, and a permanent place in the company.
In 1963, Red and Yellow officially joined the SPLAT team, bringing a little more noise, color, and mess to diners across the West Coast.
1980s
ROUGH TIMES
Big chains were expanding fast, backed by bigger advertising budgets, wider distribution, and standardized menus. Small roadside diners began disappearing, and SPLAT was pushed out of many of the places it had once called home.
The company grew smaller, production slowed, and fewer trucks left the factory each week. But SPLAT never disappeared completely.
Independent diners kept the bottles on their tables, ordered the same cases they always had, and served RED and YELLOW to another generation of regulars.
Those loyal kitchens kept the company going through its hardest years.
TODAY
STILL MAKIN’ IT MESSY
The world has changed since 1948. Diners have come and gone, highways have been rerouted, and food trends have changed more times than we can count.
But one thing never really disappeared.
People still gather around a table, pass the bottle, and aren’t afraid to make a little mess. That’s what SPLAT has always been about—and that’s why we’re still here.
